WeChange.AI – Essential Digital Literacy Series

Welcome to our Essential Digital Literacy series! At WeChange.AI, we understand that everyone starts their tech journey from a different place. Maybe you’ve just begun using computers, or perhaps you know the basics but need a bit more confidence – wherever you’re at, we’re here to help you take the next step.

Why are we sharing this?

Helping people feel comfortable and safe with technology is at the heart of our mission. Our day-to-day services focus on supporting people in their working lives and helping organisations across the UK make the most of digital tools. But we also want to reach those who are just getting started with computers and the internet. We created this series to offer practical, easy-to-follow guidance for anyone with very basic digital skills (or none at all). In plain English and a friendly tone, we’ll walk you through the essentials – from turning on a device and using a mouse and keyboard, to staying safe online and managing files.

What can you expect?

This series is like a beginner’s road map to the digital world. We start with the absolute basics and gradually introduce new skills and concepts:

  • Clear explanations – We avoid jargon and explain any tech terms in simple words. (For example, we’ll answer “What is digital literacy?” in straightforward terms.)
  • Step-by-step guides – Many posts will include bite-sized steps and pictures or screenshots. You can follow along at your own pace, whether it’s connecting to Wi-Fi or exploring the Windows desktop.
  • Accessibility for all – Everyone should be able to use technology. You’ll find tips on making your screen easier to see or using tools like screen readers. This series goes hand-in-hand with our Accessibility series, which focuses on tools and settings for people with specific needs. Together, these resources are part of our commitment to leave no one behind.
  • Useful links and resources – Each post includes links to helpful resources or further reading. If you want to dive deeper into a topic or need downloadable materials (like cheat-sheets or videos), we’ll point you in the right direction. These extra assets can reinforce your learning or offer support in different formats.

How is this series organised?

The Essential Digital Literacy series can be used however you wish, there’s six articles and we’ll add more as customers request them. You can also find a dedicated Accessibility section as that’s an incredibly important topic and justifies it’s own guides.

Topics include – an overview of why digital literacy matters, basic operations (using the power button, mouse, keyboard), understanding accessibility features, file management essentials, internet safety, an introduction to Microsoft 365 apps, holding online meetings, and handy shortcuts/tips to save time. Each topic is broken down into manageable chunks, so you won’t feel overwhelmed. You can browse the list and jump to what you need most, or start from the beginning and work your way through.

WeChange.AI is here to support you.

We believe technology should empower everyone, not intimidate them. By sharing this beginner-friendly series (along with our other learning resources like the Accessibility series), we hope to help people gain confidence in using digital tools, both at work and in their daily life. Whether you’re an absolute beginner or just brushing up on fundamentals, we welcome you to explore these guides. Feel free to share them with your colleagues, friends or anyone who might benefit – together, we can help build digital skills across all our communities.
